Allow me to introduce our new para, Mrs. Purnell. She comes our way from Hillcrest Heights Elementary, and has many years of experience working with little ones. She says she especially loves working with children who are struggling, or those with special needs. Mrs. Purnell comes very highly recommended, and jumped straight in with both feet working with children and helping me with prep. I'm so glad she is here!
When you can, please stop by to meet the newest member to our 123 KinderStreet family, and to find out more about Mrs. Purnell, just click on her picture above, or to the right.
Last summer, I stumbled upon an amazing iPad app called Educreations that provides a virtual whiteboard, and allows me to create video lessons. I'm having a lot of fun with it! If this sounds like something you'd like to try for your little student, just follow this link over to the Educreations site, where you can create your own free account and start making your own online classroom.
Here is the first of many Online Classroom tutorials; it's a review of the class rules.
During Collections time, the kids choose a partner to work with. Together, they have to choose a collection, decided on a strategy to count their collection, help each other count, and record the amount and their counting strategy on a recording sheet.
The kids are having lots of fun working with the manipulatives, but they are also learning the fine art of collaboration and negotiation (very difficult for five-year-olds!). Later in the week, I will post some pictures of the kids working together with Collections. But for now, check out our second Online Classroom tutorial with your child and review the three strategies for counting that we have learned so far.
