Back in August, Mrs. Jenkins discovered a large family of unusually colorful caterpillars munching on her snapdragons. She had never seen caterpillars like that before, so she decided to collect some in the classroom butterfly garden for the class.
As the caterpillars grew, they changed from bristly black worms to plump, squishy creatures with white speckles, orange spots and tall black spikes all over them. We wondered, "What kind of butterfly will it become?"
Soon after, two of the caterpillars crawled to the top of the net. They curved their bodies into loops and formed chrysalises. Before we knew it, those caterpillars had emerged as beautiful Buckeye Butterflies!
We kept our butterfly friends for only one week in their net, feeding them sugar water and a can of mixed fruit. But by Friday, the time had come to set them free to rejoin their natural habitat.
